Poster advertising an exhibition of work by young Mexican artists 'of the revolution' held at the Casa de Vacas in Retiro Park, Madrid, June 1929

Gabriel Fernández Ledesma Mexican

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 691

During the 1920s, the Mexican government devoted considerable resources to art education in schools, as a means of nation building. Fernández Ledesma—the artist responsible for this poster—was sent to Spain in 1929 to exhibit some of the students’ work. The text around the image refers to the "great revolution" and the art that it gave rise to, an equivalence reflected in the scenes of military engagement and artistic practice. The verse below it describes artistic expression as a "cry of freedom" outside the restrictions of the academy.
