Brewing Tea in the Shade of Trees

Aoki Mokubei Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 231

In this idyllic mountain landscape by the Kyoto-based potter and painter Aoki Mokubei, a group of literati gather to partake of sencha (steeped tea) according to Chinese fashion. A young servant tends to the ceramic stove, which heats a kettle of water. The painting evokes the Sinophile literati culture of Japan’s urban elite.
