This spring, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will present two performances celebrating The Costume Institute’s exhibition
China: Through the Looking Glass as well as the 100th anniversary of the Asian Art Department. Staged in two of the Met’s most iconic spaces, the events feature some of China’s most exquisite and creative artists in singular performance experiences, staged just for the Met.
For the opening concert in conjunction with the highly anticipated
China: Through the Looking Glass, pianist
Lang Lang will perform a special evening of music on May 14 at 8:00 p.m. in the Great Hall, one of the Met’s most magnificent spaces. Lang Lang, regarded worldwide as one of the hottest musicians in classical music, and as a performer revered for his virtuosity and energetic style, recently appeared at the 2015 Grammy Awards. This performance at the Met will also be
live streamed.
Also, On March 21, at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., a sneak peek of the highly anticipated opera
Paradise Interrupted, a collaboration between artist Jennifer Wen Ma and composer Huang Ruo, will be staged at The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing. This is the first opera by Jennifer Wen Ma, who was a key member of the core creative team for visual and special effects during the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This special preview of
Paradise Interrupted, which will premiere at the Spoleto Festival USA in May, reveals the first 30 minutes of the full piece—a poetic weaving of the western myth of the Garden of Eden and the Chinese myth of the Peony Pavilion. The narrative follows a woman in search of an unattainable ideal, exploring a world that is activated by her singing voice, as she attempts to return to the garden. This preview features Ma’s dramatic large-scale installation, which will be located on the platform of The Temple of Dendur. Celebrated Chinese singer Qian Yi, who is one of the premier performers of classic Chinese opera, will perform.
