On September 1, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will welcome thirty-nine fellows to take part in The Met’s 2024-2025 Fellowship Program. The cohort, comprised of eleven senior and twenty-eight junior scholars, join the Museum from approximately twelve countries including Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Greece, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Over the course of their twelve-month residencies, fellows are fully integrated into the life of the Met. Fellows will have access to the Museum’s renowned staff, libraries, collections, research facilities, and research laboratories to further their individual research projects. Book manuscripts, doctoral dissertations, scholarly articles, conservation training, and analytical experiments are among the intellectual pursuits developed in dialogue with The Met’s collections, curators, conservators, and educators.
Fellows’ projects span a vast array of topics while intervening in a range of fields including art history, anthropology, museum studies, critical theory, philosophy, historiography, conservation, and the material sciences. Among this year’s projects are an in-depth study of Nuyorican artists in the 1970s and 80s; an exploration of women printmakers during the French Revolution; and a close examination of 8th-century full figure Maya Hieroglyphs. The diversity of fellows’ projects reflects the diversity of The Met’s robust collection.
During their time at The Met, each fellow is paired with a supervisor in a host department with whom they will confer and collaborate. Drawing on the strengths, resources, and expertise of their supervisors and host departments, fellows will use the Museum as a vibrant space for dedicated research, collaboration, professional development, and the dynamic exchange of ideas.
