Anna van Bergen (1492–1541) and Her Son Hendrik (born 1519) as the Virgin and Child

Copy after Jan Gossart (called Mabuse) Netherlandish

Not on view

This painting is likely a replica of Gossart’s lost portrait of the noblewoman Anna van Bergen posing with her son Hendrik as the Virgin and Child. Placed in front of a fictive frame, they project into our space. Portraits of secular people in the guise of holy figures may seem provocative today, but they captured their sitters’ aspirations to emulate ideals of virtue and piety. This high-quality copy, made by someone closely familiar with Gossart’s technique, is the best surviving version of over two dozen copies produced throughout the 1500s. These numerous iterations attest to the composition’s importance and appeal.
