Mountains of the Heart (Kyōchūzan)

Illustrations by Kameda Bōsai Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 231

The poet-calligrapher Kameda Bōsai executed the original paintings in this book while he was inebriated at a gathering of literati acquaintances, where the host showed off an ink stick by the famous Chinese ink maker Fang Yulu (active 1570–1619). Accompanied by brusquely brushed calligraphy also in Bōsai’s hand, the illustrations encapsulate the artist’s minimalist yet evocative style.
