Illustrations by Kawamura Bunpō Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 231

Illustrated by Kawamura Bunpō, this guide is a sequel to a publication by Takebe Ayatari (1719–1774) designed to teach students the rudiments of Chinese-style painting. It features multicolor, printed images showcasing various painting elements as well as complete compositions. Each image is accompanied by a brief title describing the illustrated technique. The third volume includes ten views of West Lake, an admired locale in China and a quintessential theme for painters in Japan.
